Summary

An absolute timeless piece that thrusts the reader into the harrowing life of Scarlett O'Hara as she makes sense of her life before, during, and after the Civil War。 While it is a long novel, it is by no means a slow read。 I found myself hating the girl who flew off the beginning pages as selfish, vain, and childish。 Yet, by the end of the novel, I wept with her, begged for her to keep going for Melanie, and respected the woman who had been broken, only to rise as a hardened pillar of strength。 An absolute timeless piece that thrusts the reader into the harrowing life of Scarlett O'Hara as she makes sense of her life before, during, and after the Civil War。 While it is a long novel, it is by no means a slow read。 I found myself hating the girl who flew off the beginning pages as selfish, vain, and childish。 Yet, by the end of the novel, I wept with her, begged for her to keep going for Melanie, and respected the woman who had been broken, only to rise as a hardened pillar of strength。 The love story between Scarlett and Rhett is arguably one of the original "alpha male pursuing a younger woman" trope。 Riddled with hardship and pride, these two characters were made for each other and their chemistry is undeniable。 Overall, Margaret Mitchell delivers a classic that paints a realistic picture of love and maturity that will be enjoyed by generations to come。 。。。more

I read this because a friend simply couldn't believe I had never read it。 Now that I've finished it, I too am wondering how the title escaped my "Books Read" list。 This classic deserves all of the accolades it has received。 What a delightful treat! I loved having the chance to see the Civil War from the perspective of the South, and I felt sorry for the pain they went through。 So often we see the North as the "good guys" and the South as the "bad guys。" It isn't so simple。 Reading this book was I read this because a friend simply couldn't believe I had never read it。 Now that I've finished it, I too am wondering how the title escaped my "Books Read" list。 This classic deserves all of the accolades it has received。 What a delightful treat! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Scarlett is certainly the most negative lead character that I have ever cared about。 She has so few redeeming qualities and yet Mitchell writes her in such a way that is so compelling and entertaining。 Yes, she loves her mom and dad。 Yes, she loves Tara, yes, she is strong and smart。 But why oh why does she hate people for loving her? Why does she wish people to be dead so she can get her way? Why does she keep coveting Ashley for so long? Melanie is the true hero and props the book up of course Scarlett is certainly the most negative lead character that I have ever cared about。 She has so few redeeming qualities and yet Mitchell writes her in such a way that is so compelling and entertaining。 Yes, she loves her mom and dad。 Yes, she loves Tara, yes, she is strong and smart。 But why oh why does she hate people for loving her? Melanie is the true hero and props the book up of course。 She is a breath of fresh air while Scarlett and Rhett play their games and wheal and deal and hurt each other for sport。 How tragic that they never seem to be able to love each other at the right time or in the right way。 I have to say it was very difficult at times to read this with such a twist on the perspective of slave owning and the light in which the author paints African Americans and Southerners and Northerners during the civil war。 Hearing Scarlett’s thoughts and feeling her pain made me sympathetic to her even though she was clearly doing wrong by so many standards。 I often had to stop and give myself and good shake and tell myself that she deserved what was happening to her because she was definitely making bad choices。It was very thought provoking and gave great detail on what the civilians and military people must have gone through in the civil war。 Things that I had never thought about were covered and brought to life。 Definitely an epic novel and a satisfying read despite the somewhat bitter ending。 I find it hard to believe that Scarlett and Rhett would ever end up with a happily ever after, but I guess it’s possible。 The ending is probably as positive an ending as the author could muster after championing such a negative lead as Scarlett。 。。。more

The story revolves around life in the South during the Civil War。 Although it’s a fictional story the author’s descriptive writing makes it feel so real。 You can feel the fear, anger and heartbreak as if you were there。 The main characters are Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara。 They’re surrounded by an amazing and interesting cast of people throughout the story。 Rhett is a scoundrel and ill received in polite society due to his unconformity of societal rules。 He sees a kinship in Scarlett。 Althou The story revolves around life in the South during the Civil War。 Although it’s a fictional story the author’s descriptive writing makes it feel so real。 You can feel the fear, anger and heartbreak as if you were there。 The main characters are Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara。 They’re surrounded by an amazing and interesting cast of people throughout the story。 Rhett is a scoundrel and ill received in polite society due to his unconformity of societal rules。 He sees a kinship in Scarlett。 Although Scarlett starts off the proper southern lady her scandalous ways eventually lead to her be an outcast。 After suffering through the war Scarlett vows never to be poor again and does whatever is necessary to make that happen。 Sometimes that means hurting those you’re supposed to love。 Scarlett’s real love in life is Tara ( her familiar plantation), her parents and money。 In some ways I applaud Scarlett for her ability to speak up when women were not to be heard but in other ways she’s a spoiled child。 Rhett is the only person she cannot manipulate and I found myself liking Rhett despite his own short comings。 The book was an enjoyable read for me even though parts made me want to scream or even cry。 The ending was fitting for the turn of events that took place。 。。。more

A perfect balance of everything that makes an unforgettable epic story。 I appreciate how the author seamlessly changes point of view when the story requires it。 Her words are beautiful and poetic。 The characters are memorable and the settings vividly described。 Society during the Civil War era is an important component of this story and serves as the source of motivation for character behaviors。 Detailed and dramatic。 Wonderfully written。

Epic story with which we are all familiar due to the movie。 But so much more detailed is the book, especially about reconstruction and politics of the time。 Not sure how historically accurate this really is。 But the portrayal of slavery is shockingly dated。 But one feels one is getting the flavor of Georgia at that time。Different flavors of love。 Melanie wife of Ashley is the heroine of the book。 Rhett Butler, a fascinating character, eventuality comes off well too。 This is a review of the audio Epic story with which we are all familiar due to the movie。 But so much more detailed is the book, especially about reconstruction and politics of the time。 Not sure how historically accurate this really is。 But the portrayal of slavery is shockingly dated。 But one feels one is getting the flavor of Georgia at that time。Different flavors of love。 Melanie wife of Ashley is the heroine of the book。 Rhett Butler, a fascinating character, eventuality comes off well too。 This is a review of the audio version which is extraordinarily narrated, astonishingly well done。The last hour is really a tearjerker。 So sensitively written as to really get us inside the emotions of the characters。 It really is an extraordinary achievement, this tome。 4。5 stars。 。。。more

This book broke my heart。 I've been lucky lately with bricks。 The last 150~ pages are just clear glass。 An open ending is attached, and for some reason it suits me, although if you think about it, the novel seems to end, and there is a feeling that you turn the page, and there is another chapter; but, alas, it is not。Many moments in the book can be discussed passionately, for hours - a lot of conflicting events, characters, themes, ideas。Starting to read this, I thought that I wouldn’t like it, This book broke my heart。 I've been lucky lately with bricks。 The last 150~ pages are just clear glass。 An open ending is attached, and for some reason it suits me, although if you think about it, the novel seems to end, and there is a feeling that you turn the page, and there is another chapter; but, alas, it is not。Many moments in the book can be discussed passionately, for hours - a lot of conflicting events, characters, themes, ideas。Starting to read this, I thought that I wouldn’t like it, and for the first hundred/two hundred pages it was like that: I was terribly annoyed by Scarlett, and all this mess with black slaves and war。But the further, the more I got attached to all。 The characters here are truly incredible, unique characters, and each reader will find their own morality and character for their hearts here。Written with sincerity and love, and now, when I write this review, I return to the text, and it becomes so warm。 I also want to note that Mitchell wrote her work as impartially as possible, without trying to pull the blanket over some particular morality, and hence the plus - you decide everything for yourself, and the book does not force you to do anything, does not impose your opinion or something something like that。First of all, this is a brave novel about human destinies, but it is also a novel about America and its politics。 This novel is inspiring, and the story does not sag one iota。The book is big, but after such an ending, I would not refuse another thousand pages。 In some book worlds, you want to stay forever。 On the one hand, it is a pity that at that time it was not so popular to write cycles, and the authors preferred for the most part to scribble stand-alone books; but remembering the same some books, which are a cycle, I would rather prefer an open ending, rather than milking the dough and stretching the rubber。I don't like to say things like that, but Gone with the Wind is really worth reading for everyone。 Yes, this is a female novel, if you think very flatly, because in the end it all comes down to love, but the love affairs of the characters here are just a skeleton, and much more problems are layered on it。 。。。more

*0。5/5I can't believe someone actually sat down and wrote a whole 900+ book about terrible racist characters falling in love with other terrible racist characters while being incredibly, unapologetically racist, and then it gets called a classic。 Not only do all the characters suck in general but their also so fucking racist that it's actually revolting。 The portrayals of slavery being a good thing for Black people, the demeaning language always used towards and for Black people, and the justifi *0。5/5I can't believe someone actually sat down and wrote a whole 900+ book about terrible racist characters falling in love with other terrible racist characters while being incredibly, unapologetically racist, and then it gets called a classic。 Not only do all the characters suck in general but their also so fucking racist that it's actually revolting。 The portrayals of slavery being a good thing for Black people, the demeaning language always used towards and for Black people, and the justification and supposed of the fucking KKK?? How are people treating this as something other than a literal piece of slavery glorification? This is the optime of white feminism with the racism dialed up to 1000。I hate this so much, Fuck Margaret Mitchell and all her racism。 This does not deserve to be considered a "classic", maybe a case study into the minds of those who think slavery can be justified and consider the confederacy just to be "southern pride" when all of its roots are in white supremacy, racism, and slavery。 。。。more

i cant believe people like this book。1。 It's racist。 No, not just the characters but the book itself。 No it isnt historically accurate。 It is a racist book trying to fish empathy for confederate states。 2。 IF we ignore the racism (which we should not NEVER EVER do) what about the disgusting age gap? That might be kind of historically accurate but i cant believe that instead of criticizing and realizing that this relationship between Scarlett and Rhett is not beautiful or great love story, PEOPLE i cant believe people like this book。1。 It's racist。 No, not just the characters but the book itself。 No it isnt historically accurate。 It is a racist book trying to fish empathy for confederate states。 2。 IF we ignore the racism (which we should not NEVER EVER do) what about the disgusting age gap? The ending was flat and after 900 pages Margaret Mitchell couldnt even finish the story?
